Capital of Lakeland’s magnificent nature is full of lakes, forests and marked trails that invite you to explore its beauty in all seasons. Memorable experiences, breathtaking landscapes, and a wide variety of local wildlife awaits. 

The purity of the region’s nature offers fantastic destinations whether you are hiking, running, walking, geocaching, snowshoeing, skiing, riding, snowmobiling, mountain biking or collecting herbs, berries and mushrooms. Alongside the activities, there are many nice locations to stop for a break or even enjoy your snacks in a campfire in the wild.

You’ll never be short of choices and the area has hundreds of kilometers of clearly marked trails. It’s easy to go to discover nature by yourself, with your travel companions or with a guided tour provided by a local company. In addition to Kuopio and Tahko, the national parks, Etelä-Konnevesi and Tiilikkajärvi, as well as many other areas nearby offer great outdoor experiences for all seasons. The terrain ranges from easy to navigate to  complete wilderness, and flat and meandering to steep and challenging.

Hiking and nature trails in Kuopio

In Kuopio, most hiking trails and nature trails can be easily accessed either by foot or by local bus. Nearest to the center, you’ll find the Puijo outdoor area, located just a couple kilometers from Kuopio market square. Its trails offer a soothing experience right next to the heart of the vibrant city.

The height of the Puijo hill is 232 meters from sea level and there are more than 200 hectares of protected forests in the area. Seven kilometers from the market square, the Kolmisoppi-Neulaniemi nature area is a versatile set of challenging high altitude routes and easy terrain trips. There truly is a route suitable for everyone.

Along with lakes and forest landscapes, you’ll find small ponds along the route as well as a peaceful campfire site on the shore of Vuorilampi pond. It is also worthwhile visiting Katiskaniemi area in Rauhalahti, and the Pölhönsaari area along the Saaristokatu.

Ylä-Antikkalan laavu Puijolla

Ylä-Antikkala lean-to shelter, Puijo

The shelter is located just 500 meters from the Puijo Tower, and the nearest parking area is right next to it, along Antikkalantie.

You can reach the Puijonnokka shed via the Puijo trail network or from the parking area at the end of Puijonsarvi, which is about 1 km away.

Located in the Kolmisoppi–Neulamäki outdoor recreation area. This rest spot is also popular among families, as it’s only about a 1 km easy walk from the Kolmisoppi pond parking area to the campfire site.

Pilppa Lodge is located in the Kolmisoppi–Neulamäki outdoor recreation area, and its yard features two lean-to shelters and an outhouse. During the ski season, there is also a café serving visitors.

Pölhö cooking hut is located in Pölhö Island, along Saaristokatu, right next to the center of Kuopio. Pölhö is accessible by bus, car, bicycle or even on foot – which is why the place is especially popular with families with children.

Hiking and nature trails in Tahko

In Tahko area and nearby Pisa nature reserve, there are challenging altitudes, steeper trails, far-reaching views and comfortable resting spots, as well as well marked trails which attract visitors to explore year round. In the summer season, part of the trip can be traveled via Tahko’s stairs which lead to the top of the slopes, or by a scenic ski lift. Huutavanholma valley near to slopes, is a fairy tale spot of forests, ferns, streams and endless greenery.

A scenic resting spot known as Pöllö Shelter is located at the bottom of the Mäkiautio Gorge. The shelter is equipped with a woodshed and an outdoor toilet.

Located on the shores of a clear water pond in the old quartzite mine of Rahasmäki, the lean-to is a lovely place to rest and also a great place to visit in all seasons. There are two lean-to’s with fireplaces, firewood and toilet.
